El
Encanto Hotel & Garden Villas, first built in 1915, has been
restored to its original state. The historical architecture is both
Craftsman-Cottage style and Spanish Colonial Revival for which Santa
Barbara is famous. Clusters of cottages and villas make up 83 unique
and charming accommodations. Acres of lush gardens surround this
well-known romantic landmark in Southern California. The hotel is a
charter member of Historic Hotels of America, a National Trust for
Historic Preservation.
El
Encanto became well established as a premier California retreat during
the first decades of the century by catering to artists of the
Plein-Air School, celebrities and the "Carriage Trade" from the East
Coast. In the Golden Days of Hollywood celebrities such as Hedy Lamar,
Clark Gable and Carol Lombard motored up from Los Angeles to escape
the rigors of the big city and stardom.
The
hotel is a charter member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of
America, a National Trust for Historic Preservation. This honor is
largely due to the proprietor's commitment to preserving the hotel's
historic architecture and ambience. El Encanto has recently been
featured on PBS "Historic Hotels of America" and Great Country Inns.
